Manly Maze
Pattern description from No Sheep for You: “Men are hard to knit for. (The male knitters and sweater-wearers I know agree.) But what guy wouldn’t be intrigued by a sweater made from hemp? When they put this one on, they may not want to take it off. But when they do, the best news is that they can toss it in the washer and then in the dryer and it just gets softer and softer.”
Finished Measurements: About 36.25 (38, 42, 46, 50, 54)“ (92 96.5, 106.5, 117, 127, 137 cm) chest measurement.
Yarn:
- DK-weight (CYCA #3 Light) yarn.
- Hemp for Knitting Allhemp6 (100% hemp; 150 yd 137 m/92 g): marble (dark teal; MC), 7 (7, 8, 9, 10, 11) skeins; sprout (lime green; CC), 1 skein (all sizes).
- Note: for a nontapered body, you’ll need 7 (8, 9, 9, 11, 12) skeins of MC.
Needles:
- Body - sizes 3, 4, and 5 (3.25, 3.5, and 3.75 mm): 24” (60 cm) circular (cir).
- Sleeves - size 5 (3.75): set of 5 double-pointed (dpn) for all sizes; size 4 (3.5 mm): set of 5 dpn for sizes 36.25 (38, 46)“ only.
- Neckband - size 3 (3.25 mm): 16” (40 cm) cir.
- Adjust needle size if necessary to obtain the correct gauge.
Notions: Markers (m), one of which is a unique color; stitch holders or waste yarn; tapestry needle.
Notes from No Sheep for You:
- This sweater is knitted from the top down in the round.
- Hemp, like linen, has very little elasticity. When washed and blocked, hemp will “relax” and once stretched to size will remain at this size. A washed and blocked sample swatch is a must to make sure that you obtain gauge.
- In order to create the neck shaping, the sweater is knitted back and forth for the first several inches. The neckband is worked last.
- Directions are given for a straight body and a tapered body.
