MANTA is an easy-to-knit wraparound shawl with a slightly unusual shape. It’s ideal for handspun and simple to work, and the resulting wrap has a jagged look that lends itself well to many different styles - depending on your approach and yarn choice, it could be a sleek alternatively-shaped modern evening wrap or a ragged post-apocalyptic scarf.

It can be worn like a drapey triangle shawl, or wrapped up in interesting squarish configurations.

Manta is travel-friendly, both as a finished wardrobe piece and as a project - print out one page of instructions and you’re ready to go! Many knitters will find it easy to memorize, too.

For a good-sized shawl, you’ll probably want at least 400 yards of fingering- or sock weight yarn - two skeins or 800+ yards will make a larger, more luxurious shawl.

The gauge given - about 18sts./22rows for 4” - is for blocked garter stitch; except as a guideline, gauge is not too important for this project.

(Naming notes, because my pattern names are always ridiculous: Manta is named for the manta ray. I am pretty sure manta is also the word for blanket in a couple of languages. This is not really a blanket. If you are here for a blanket, I apologize.

(MANTA has already been professionally tech edited; any remaining flaws are mine.)
