It has been said that the Inuit language family includes as many as 50 different words to describe “snow”: soft snow and crunchy snow, light flurries and heavy blizzards, single tiny flakes and deep drifts. I found myself reflecting on these many words for snow as I developed this shawlette, with its variety of stitch patterns inspired by the dazzling winter weather we so rarely see in my corner of the world. It begins with a large lace snowflake motif knit from the center out, then splits into two “wings” that wander through bands of slip stitch icicles, Fair Isle flakes, and more airy lace to complete the triangle shape. The Yarn Patch’s 2022 Advent Calendar kit, including 18 miniskeins (87 yards each) in winter wonderland colors with a hint of frosty sparkle, is the perfect choice for this project.

Note: Because yarn usage can vary from knitter to knitter, this shawlette has been designed to ensure that no one will run out of any color before completing each section. As a result, many knitters will have extra yarn. Instructions for optional tassels are included to help put leftovers to good use.

12/24/2022- Note: The shawl pictured was the first test knit of this pattern. After it was completed, one element of the center Snowflake Motif (the lace diamonds in the four corners) was removed from the chart, as it distracted from the snowflake itself. I will update the pattern and Ravelry page with new pictures as soon as I can get a second sample shawl knitted!
