Celebrating the Maple Leaf!
With the theme of Canada’s 150th birthday in mind, I went searching for leaf stitch patterns. The one that caught my fancy was a clematis leaf stitch pattern in the book Charted Peasant Designs edited by Heinz Edgar Kiewe (also the author of The Sacred History of Knitting). The leaf’s jaunty angle captured the spirit of celebration. Reworking the stitches to resemble a maple leaf and adding a curled leaf stem created the perfect motif.

Adding a festive flair, the beginning border of “candles” with beads for flames is the proverbial icing on the cake! For those who prefer “unlit candles”, the beaded section is optional.

Colourwork on the outer edges of knitting tends to curl on its own, so facings are worked on the beginning and ending borders.

Pattern was professionally tech edited by Robin Melanson.
