March Weather mitts
March. The time of the year when fingerless mitts seem to be a must. No longer freezing, yet your hands get cold if not covered. You are already fed up with typical winter accessories and you want to feel that spring is coming. Fingerless mitts will keep your hands warm and at the same time will give you that feeling of a new season approaching!
Depending on the yarn you use, the mitts could be rugged looking enough to go hiking or climbing or dressy enough for a simple walk down main street.
The pattern comes from Poland but lets face it, cold is cold everywhere.
Size: woman’s average – thanks to the ribbing the mitts will easily fit most hands. The mitts measure approx. 6’’ / 15cm unstretched around the palm just above the thumb, and they will comfortably stretch up to 8 - 9’’ / 20 – 23cm around at this point.
Size can be adjusted by going up or down a needle size, or by changing the yarn weight and adjusting the needles accordingly. The length can be modified by adding or deleting a pattern repeat.
Level: Adventurous beginner or intermediate. The mitts are knit in the round. The pattern uses long-tail cast on, loop-stitch and basic lace. A photo tutorial is included to guide you through the most difficult moments.
Needle size: US 2 ½ / 3mm DPNs or circulars if you prefer the magic loop method. Cable needle, 3 stitch markers, waste yarn or stitch holder, tapestry needle for weaving ends.
Gauge: 20 sts and 27 rows in stockinette with US 2 ½ / 3mm needles = 10cm (4in). I knit rather loosely so you may need to go up a needle size (or two) to get the gauge.
Remember that the size of mitts depends on the gauge, if you want the mitts larger, the gauge should be one or two stitches smaller, and if you want the mitts smaller, the gauge should be one or two stitches bigger.
Yarn suggested: 50 - 60 grams of any worsted weight yarn that meets the gauge, wool if you want the mitts very warm.
