Margrete Open Sleeve Top
I was inspired while watching “Genius: Picasso”. So many of the clothes were crocheted, and Francoise Gilot wore a charcoal grey cardigan with an obvious “dc, ch 1” pattern. I loved the simplicity of the pattern. I honestly was going to make this a cardigan, but then also considered how adorable it might be with open sleeves as a top. So, here we are. And since Picasso was known for his love of women, I decided to rename it the Margrete Top.
This pattern is made in two pieces, then seamed with a contrasting color, brazenly seaming on the right side. Ok, I’ll admit, I ran out of yarn prior to seaming and finishing and decided to be bold and use a contrasting color. The two genius aspects of this pattern are that (1) it is made from the top down to make adjustments as you go and (2) the pattern is easy, so once you get started, it becomes an easy “make and take” project for road trips and vacations with only occasional reference to the written pattern.
I used Omega Sinfonia yarn, which is a #3 weight, 218 yard skein of 100% mercerized cotton that has a beautiful shine and summery feel, perfect for layering over a camisole. I had 3 skeins of a discontinued color (Pewter), and used Vickie Howell “Cottonish” for the contrast, another #3 weight yarn. You can use any #3 yarn that achieves the same gauge, however.
