Marguerite Bed Jacket
About the Shawl:
When my Great-Grandmother, Marguerite Kelly, gave birth to her daughter in the 1930’s, the local Ladies Guild presented her with this lace bed jacket in the hospital as a gift for the new mother. This vintage Bed Jacket hangs in our shop as a cherished knitted heirloom and remembrance of the four generations of our family. This pattern was inspired by and is named for my Grandma Kelly to recreate her elegant new mother’s wrap. We hope you enjoy it as much as we do!
Design Notes:
The shawl is worked with two strands of yarn held together throughout.
Shawl is begun with a provisional cast on.
The lace body is knit first, worked flat with a 2-stitch i-cord selvage edge.
Lace may be knit from written instructions or charts.
The cuffs are added to either side of the lace body. Before knitting each cuff, a decrease row is worked flat and then the work is joined to knit in the round.
The ribbed cuff is knit with the smaller sized needles and finished with a tubular cast off in the round
If unsure of sizing, finish the cuff on the Provisional Cast-On edge side first and try on to test for size. Additional repeats of the lace pattern may be added to the body to increase size.
