With one black shadow at its feet,
The house thro’ all the level shines,
Close-latticed in the brooding heat,
And silent in its dusty vines;
A faint-blue ridge upon the right,
An empty river-bed before,
And shallows on a distant shore,
In glaring sands and inlet bright,
But ‘Ave Mary,’ made she moan,
And ‘Ave Mary,’ night and morn,
And ‘Ah,’ she sang, ‘to be alone,
To live forgotten and love forlorn.’

This pattern is inspired by the poem Mariana In the South by Alfred, Lord Tennyson. This poem was written in 1831 and like its companion poem, Mariana, it describes a lonely forlorn woman pining for her love. However, much more is made of the picturesque location compare with Mariana. According to Tennyson, it “came to my father as he was travelling between Narbonne and Perpignan”. These mitts are made one at a time but I have included notes on making them Two at a Time (TAAT) using the magic loop method at the end. I used the magic loop method but you can use any method you feel comfortable using. There is a thumb gusset and the thumb stitches are placed onto scrap yarn or a stitch holder while completing the main part of the mitt.
