Marie Curie Quest Socks

My day job is working as a doctor for Marie Curie - a UK charity that provides care and support for terminally ill people and their families. Marie Curie nurses work night and day, in people’s homes across the UK, providing hands-on care and vital emotional support. I work in one of the hospices, which provides specialist round-the-clock care.
When I learned that Cityknits had launched a special Marie Curie yarn, I decided it might be a nice idea to knit a pair of socks for each of my patients at Christmas. I’ve managed to rope in quite a few staff, and we’re hoping to get a group of day therapy patients doing it too. With the help of others, we now want to knit socks for everyone in all 9 hospices - that’s 229 pairs in total!
Several people asked for the pattern I use. These simple socks are my basic plain sock pattern, developed over years of sock knitting by trying different patterns and techniques, and gradually pulling together all the aspects that worked together to fit my feet perfectly. A basic vanilla sock, with heel flap and gusset, they are ideal for beginner sock knitters and can be customised to fit any size feet by adjusting the number of stitches.
If you’d like to help by knitting socks for my patients, the yarn is available from www.cityknits.co.uk. Completed socks can be posted to:
