Squishy, mile-high cables form subtle, slightly asymmetrical waves around the body of this delightfully cozy winter hat. Written for three height/brim options, Marin Headlands lets you choose your own adventure: a deep, luxurious double-brimmed slouch (with or without an oversized pom-pom), a single-brimmed, just-barely slouchy version, or a more fitted, unisex beanie. Cables cascade directly out of a 2x2 ribbed brim with an optional tubular cast on for a polished finished look. A round, multi-ply heavy worsted or aran weight yarn (like the Barrett Wool Co. HOME and YOTH Father I used for these samples) makes these cables really pop off the background stitches, giving them height, dimensionality, and that tangible smooshiness we love in a textured knit for these deep winter days. This one works in a huge range of colors, but solid or semisolid colorways let the cables take center stage. Size
One size (Adult S/M/L) with beanie and slouch options; circumference 20” / 50 cm; height 12” / 30 cm (slouch with brim unfolded) or 8.25” / 20 cm (beanie). Note: because these cables derive from 2x2 ribbing, the hat is incredibly stretchy, making this a “one size fits most” scenario.

Yarn
For slouch with large pom pom: 300 yards / 275 meters of heavy worsted weight wool yarn; for beanie: 150 yards / 137 meters of heavy worsted weight wool yarn. Slouch sample knit in Barrett Wool Co. Home Worsted Weight (100% American wool, 230 Yards / 210 Meters per 100 grams), in “Scout.” Beanie sample knit in YOTH Yarns Father (100% American Rambouillet wool, 220 yards / 201 meters per 100 grams), in Rosemary.

Gauge
24 sts and 28 rnds per 4” / 10 cm in cable pattern on largest needle, after blocking. One repeat of cable chart measures approximately 4” / 10 cm wide.

Needles
One long (32” / 80 cm or longer) circular needle (for magic loop), or 5 double-pointed needles, per knitter preference, in sizes US 7 / 4.5 mm or size needed to obtain gauge and US 5 / 3.75 mm or two needle sizes smaller than gauge needle for the ribbing. Note: if you are doing the optional tubular cast on, you may wish to use a needle one or two sizes smaller than your ribbing needle for the foundation rows.
