This pattern is still in test knitting. I am listing it now to allow the test knitters to make project pages. You can buy it, it is a complete pattern but the final draft will not be released for at least another week. This pattern is being professionally tech edited as it is being test knitted and we have not completed the final edit.

This pattern was named for my friend Marina who makes the most amazing buttons. She sent me some incredible buttons she made from deer antlers. Those buttons made me want to design a sweater with a button, that simple. After playing with cable designs and ideas I decided I wanted to start with a cable stitch pattern that widened and wrapped around the sides of my sweater. I love that the cable pattern only hugs the sides, and can be seen from the front. I knew I wanted to do a shawl collar, because I had just finished working a sweater for myself with a shawl collar and I really enjoyed the short row shaping for the collar, also as it is a child sweater I like the added warmth around the neck. I live in the Adirondacks in NY, we know cold up here, that extra layer of fabric is so great to me. The design just came together so nicely. The sleeves are designed to be wide, because I like to be able to comfortably layer under sweaters, if you like a more narrow sleeve you can put in more decreases as you work down.

I try to write as simply and uncomplicated as possible. This is designed with one needle size throughout, but if you wish you can switch to smaller needles for all ribbing.

All instructions are written and charted.

Gauge:
21 sts x 30 rows = 4 in x 4 inches/10cm in stockinette stitch.
Pattern Notes:

  1. This sweater is knit seamlessly from the top down with raglan increases.
  2. The sweater is worked flat until the sleeve stitches are placed on waste yarn and stitches are cast on for the neck placket, then it is worked in the round for the body of the sweater.
  3. The sleeves are worked in the round.
  4. Stitches are picked up short rows are worked to create the shawl collar. The bottom edges are then attached to the front to finish the neck placket.
  5. Two unique stitch markers can be used to keep track of the beginning and end of the cable design. These are tracked in the pattern but they are optional. These stitch markers move outward to show the edges of the cable pattern. There are no increases in the cable pattern, the stitch markers just move outward as the pattern widens. When knitting in the round I only kept a marker at the beginning of the cable design.
  6. You can go down a needle size for the cuffs, hem and collar of the sweater to create a tighter ribbing if you prefer.
