Mariner Sweater
Through January 31, 2025, we’ll be donating 10% of all proceeds equally to World Kitchen and Los Angeles Fire Department Foundation in aid of first responders and those who lost their homes. I grew up in Los Angeles and this is a small way I can support my home town.
This sailor-inspired sweater is classic and timeless, with nautical stripes and a beautiful button band detail at one shoulder (optional). The Mariner features a bottom-up construction in the round, then the sleeves are picked up and shaped in a hybrid set-in/modified drop technique. Armholes are worked with stunning “fully fashioned” cable decreases reminiscent of luxury sweaters.
This piece also features a generous crew neck and an oversized fit, with oversized ease in the body and the sleeves. It has a slightly more streamlined fit in the upper torso and shoulder. Choose a size as directed, or size down one size for a more traditional relaxed fit. View A includes the button closure on the left shoulder, while View B does not.

Select size based on the intended wearer’s actual upper chest measurement. Due to the generous ease of this pattern, you can safely size down for a less oversized look, aiming for 4”-10” ease at full bust. If you are between sizes based on upper bust, size down.
Finished garment circumferences: 37.75 (41.75, 45.75, 49.75) (53.75, 57.75, 61.75) (65.75, 69.75, 73.75)” / 94.5 (104.5, 114.5, 124.5) (134.5, 144.5, 154.5) (164.5, 174.5, 184.5) cm.
Intended for actual full bust measurement: of 30 (34, 38, 42) (46, 50, 54) (58, 62, 66)” / 76 (86.5, 96.5, 106.5) (117, 127, 137) (147.5, 157.5, 167.5) cm. Optional bust darts are included.
The designer is wearing Size B. Their measurements: 32.5” / 82.5 cm upper bust and 34” / 86.5 cm full bust, with 11” / 28 cm upper arm.
Gauge
21 sts x 28 rnds/rows = 4 x 4” / 10 x 10 cm knit in the round in Stockinette Stitch with Needle A, and 1x1 Rib with Needle B
Yarn Selection Yardage
I recommend a non-superwash, DK weight yarn that achieves gauge and has crimp and recovery, as this is an oversized garment and needs structure. I used De Rerum Natura’s Pénélope (90% organic Merinos d’Arles and 10% mulberry silk, 145 yds / 133 m / 50 g / 1.75 oz).
MC: 8 (9, 9, 10) (11, 11, 12) (13, 14, 14) balls of Pénélope in Crème.
CC: 2 balls of Pénélope in Belle Etoile.
OR DK weight yarn in the following amounts:

MODIFICATIONS
45 (50, 55, 60) (65, 70, 75) (80, 85, 90) yards / 45 (45, 50, 55) (60, 65, 70) (70, 75, 80) meters change for every 1” / 2.5 cm added or removed in the body.
15 (15, 15, 20) (20, 20, 25) (25, 25, 30) yards / meters in the MC is required for every 1” / 2.5 cm of bust darts added.
Needles
A: Main Fabric: US 6 / 4.0 mm
B: Ribbing: US 5 / 3.75 mm
Both sizes in the following lengths: 32-60” / 80-150 cm circulars to match body circumference, and DPN’s or other method to work small circumference.
Notions
4 buttons sized 5/8-3/4” / 15-20 mm, unique marker for BOR, stitch markers, cable needle, spare circular needle or smooth waste yarn, removable stitch markers, & tapestry needle.
Skills Used
This pattern is suitable for a first-time garment knitter who are familiar with these skills: :
- Working in the round and back and forth.
- Working in small circumferences using DPN, magic loop, or other method.
- Working increases and/or decreases at given intervals.
- Setting aside a part of a work to come back to later.
- German short row shaping.
- Knitting cable crossings, with or without a cable needle, from a written or charted pattern.
- Three-needle bind-off (also known as three-needle joinery)
- One-step button holes and sewing buttons.
- Picking up and knitting from an edge or middle of work.
