Mark's Mukluks
I have a big 10 month old boy and I live in Minnesota. He doesn’t wear shoes yet and whenever I put him in his car seat, his pants ride up exposing the bare skin of his lower legs. No matter how I tug up on his socks and down on his pant legs, his poor little calves are uncovered.
I designed these baby galoshes to cover his feet and lower legs with room to tuck his pant legs inside. When I take him out shopping with me, I tuck a blanket around his waist and legs and cover the car seat with an attached drape but these really keep him warm as they insulate his legs from his feet almost to his knees. In these climes, I will take any extra warmth I can get for him!
I used a skein of HoneyGold Acres worsted weight yarn I purchased at the Minnesota State Fair. It is a wool/silk/angora blend yarn and I bought it specifically to make next-to-the-skin winter items for him. It is a lovely soft and drapey yarn but any worsted weight yarn will work. I used a little more than half of a 216 yard skein for this project.
I used US 7 DPN’s with a gauge of 5 stitches and 8 rows to 1 inch.
This is a one size pattern for large babies and small kids. They are intentionally large around the ankle and instep so that pant legs can be tucked in. The tucked clothing also keeps them held on. I knit them with some ease in foot length too so that he can wear them for another season or two.
