Marl Mirage Socks
These deliciously thick socks are inspired by Feyre Archeron of the A Court of Thorns and Roses series by Sarah J. Maas. Throughout the series, manner of dress is an important characterization element. For our heroine, Feyre, it is often symbolic of a particular role she must play or an energy she is manifesting, whether it be pure power or pure coziness. Naturally, as a knitter what would stick out to me is a pair of thick socks Feyre dons with her leggings and pretty cream sweater. So, I present to you a squishy pair of 2x2 ribbed, cuff-down, handknit socks made with a combination of yarns to achieve a worsted weight.
Note on Construction & Fit:
This pattern features a 2x2 rib that is worked throughout the entire sock, including over the shadow wrap heel. The socks are designed to be worked in magic loop, but can be easily adapted for DPNs.
Since these socks are worked at a thick gauge in 2x2 ribbing, stitch counts are in intervals of 8 stitches and result in significant circumference changes. Therefore, if you would like to make minor fit tweaks, I would suggest fiddling with yarn weights and/or needle sizes.
Needles: 3.25mm needles with a 32 inch (80cm) cable for magic loop
Please note: I am a relatively loose knitter, many testers needed to go up to 3.5mm or 3.75mm needles to achieve gauge and a fabric that was comfortable to work.
Notions: light bulb stitch marker, tapestry needle
Gauge: 5 stitches per inch (2.5cm) in 2x2 rib, slightly stretched
Sizes: 1 (2) 3
corresponding to foot circumferences of approximately 5-7 inches (7-9 inches) 9-11 inches OR 12.7 - 17.8 cm (17.9 - 22.9 cm) 23 - 27.9 cm
Yarn: 200m (300m) 400m each of
One strand of fingering weight sock yarn + one strand of DK weight wool OR three strands of fingering weight sock yarn OR two strands of sport weight
There is wiggle room with respect to precisely the weights you choose to use. You will notice in my samples there are mixes of sport, true DK weights and light to heavy fingering weights. You may want to consider the durability properties of the yarns you are selecting as well.
Examples of combos I have used in my samples are:
Hayfield DK classic (131 yards or 120m / 50g) + Birch & Lily Birch Sock (400 yards or 365 m / 100g)
Noro Silk Garden Sock Solo (328 yards or 300m / 100g) + Patons Kroy Sock (166 yards or 151 m / 50g)
Rosa Pamar Vovo (156 yards or 143m /50g) + Knit Picks Stroll Tweed (231 yards or 211 m / 50g)
