The Marlisle Cowl uses a knitting technique that I discovered in Anna Maltz’s book, Marlisle: A New Direction in Knitting. It’s a fun, easy way to work with two colors. To achieve color changes, some stitches are worked with one strand of each color held together, and the other stitches are worked with one color, while the second color is held to the back of the work. If you’ve never tried Marlisle, this cowl is the perfect introduction!

In addition to the knitting pattern, you will need the following materials to knit the Marlisle Cowl:

YARNS
Louise Robert Collection – MERINO WORSTED (100% merino; 200m/220 yds; 100 g / 3.5 oz) –
• A: 2 skeins in Metal
• B: 1 skein in Mouton Noir

NEEDLES AND NOTIONS
Size 4.5mm / 7 US circular needle - length 60 cm / 24 in or size needed to obtain gauge.
Blunt tapestry needle
Stitch marker
Scrap yarn – a ball of worsted weight cotton in a contrasting color (yellow yarn is used in the technical pictures and the instructions).

GAUGE
18 stitches and 25 rounds = 10 cm/ 4 in worked over Marlisle Pattern.

FINISHED SIZE
Circumference/length - 54.5 cm / 21.5 in
Height – 24 cm / 9.5 in

Notes:

1. This double-layer cowl is knitted in the round. The front of the cowl is worked in the Marlisle Technique using colors A and B, then the lining of the cowl is knitted in St st using color A only. The lining stitches are grafted to the cast-on stitches to finish the cowl.
2. The Marlisle color pattern can be worked following the text or the chart.
3. When knitting with 2 colors, the yarns may twist around each other. You will occasionally need to untwist them as you work.
