This is a fun, feminine design inspired by the nursery rhyme “Mary Mary Quite Contrary”. The main motif on this sock reflects “silver bells”, while delicate mock cabling along the sides are the “cockle shells”. The use of softly coloured yarn contributes to the overall delicate look of this pattern.
These socks are constructed toe-up. They feature lace stitches that make up the flower motif and a mock cable creates the cockle shells that run up the sides of the sock. No cable needle required!
The toe is a pointy style of toe. If you prefer a broader toe, cast on more stitches as per your preference but keep increasing stitches as instructed until the toe has the same number of stitches as stated in the pattern.
The toe uses a Turkish cast on method, and the heel is very simple to knit, using a method shared by Wendy Johnson.
Feel free to adapt this pattern and work a different toe or heel method to what is noted according to your preference.
