ALCHEMIST COWL

This is an easy pattern for beginners or an easy pattern for a knitter who likes to knit at the same time as watching TV.
And it’s a short time project. I knit my first cowl in a weekend, so it’s a useful project if you want to switch off from another knitting project.

I designed the pattern to showcase my hand dyed yarns and to use up leftover yarns in my stash.

The cowl is reversible, with a different pattern on each side.
It looks fabulous as a neckwarmer / shortie scarf. without the bulkiness of a full scarf. It fits nicely inside the neck of a coat or just warm and decorative around the neck of a jumper.

The simple pattern is very effective. It knits up quickly and it’s a great way to use up sock yarn.

The gauge isn’t that important. Just make sure you knit the two strands together for every stitch.

I’m always stunned that just knitting knit and purl stitches can look so awesome. Yarn and two pointy sticks transforming into a beautiful cowl ; that’s alchemy.

You will need to hold 2 different sock yarns together - this leaves loads of options for making the cowl in a number of different changing colours to work.

The original photos show my putting together one single 50g skein of Royd Moor Yarns hand dyed sock yarn, together with one single 50g skein of white sock yarn, so that I could show off the pattern using a lighter colour. But as long as there are 2 strands held together, you can change the colours as often as you like. It’s a stash busting pattern, it doesn’t take long to do and it’s a wee bit pretty!

My yarns are available for sale on ebay but you can just about use any 4 ply and sock yarn that you’d like.

I’ve also added a DK version for the ALCHEMIST COWL on the pattern.
