I designed the Mas Vida Shawl to be the perfect travel project for my 2-week trip to Ireland, Scotland, and Spain in the Spring of 2022. I wanted to pack minimal supplies and work on a project that wouldn’t work up too quickly (no one wants to run out of knitting during a trip) or too slowly and that I could do without needing to reference the pattern very often.
About The Pattern Design & Construction
The Mas Vida shawl is knit side to side in garter and eyelets- not a single purl stitch in the pattern because you’re on virtual vacation and sometimes we need a vacation from those pesky purls. I let the beautiful yarn shine, adding interest with increases, decreases and some easy-to-execute eyelets.
This pattern has been tech edited & test knit so you can knit on with confidence. There are several videos included to help you learn how to read your knitting in this shawl, how to cast on and bind off.
- Size: 104 in / 264 cm long 19 in / 48.25 cm deep at the center.
- Gauge: 21 stitches & 28 rows over 4 in / 10 cm in garter after blocking.
Materials:
Note- while this pattern is written for fingering weight yarn, you can easily adjust it to use the yarn you have! Check out the table in the photos to get a better idea of how much yarn you may want to have on hand to make a shawl in the size that you want.
Yarn: 2 skeins of Fingering Weight Yarn (100g each)
Needles: US 5 / 3.75 mm, 24 in / 60 cm circular, or your preferred needles for knitting flat.
Notions: 2 stitch markers, locking stitch marker (optional) to mark right side, sewing needle and thread, blocking pins,
tapestry needle to weave in ends.
About the Name
Mas Vida is the name of my friend Marta’s sister-in-law’s vineyard that we visited while in Catalonia. In Catalan, Mas is a country house- which means the house of LIFE and of course it means “more” in Spanish. Vida means “life.”
I hope this pattern, meant for taking wherever life takes you, is a great travel companion for you. Each moment is precious. Go. Enjoy. Be grateful. Enjoy Mas Vida!
