Matchbox Pet Axolotl
This pattern is for a small low sew axolotl and a snail friend / snack! The pattern also includes printable templates to enable you to make the matchbox and name card, making it an ideal gift, stocking filler or craft fair item.
This project is low-sew - you only have to sew a horizontal line for the axolotl’s mouth and fasten the snail’s shell into a rolled position (this process is explained with photos). If you choose to make the axolotl without the box, this design also works well in thicker chenille yarns.
The pattern is written in English using American crochet terms and contains loads of photos to help you every step of the way.
You will need:
Yarn of your choice. I used dk weight yarn (equivalent to light worsted, weight 3) and my finished axolotl measures approximately 9.5cm long and 2.5cm tall (the tail will bend to fit into the box). Using a thicker yarn than this may result in your pet axolotl not fitting inside the accompanying box.
You will need the following colours:
- Main head & body colour - I used light pink (approx. 11.5m).
- Gills colour - I used dark pink (approx. 1.25m).
- Snail body colour - I used dark grey (approx. 1.25m).
- Snail shell colour - I used light brown (approx. 2.5m).
Please Note = The amount of yarn used will vary according to yarn weight, hook size and stitch tension so these measurements are only a rough guide. The pattern refers to the colours that I used, however these can be substituted for colours of your choice.
You will also need:
- A suitable size hook for the yarn you have chosen - I used a 4mm hook.
- A pair of 6mm black safety eyes.
- A small amount of toy stuffing.
- Other tools you will need are a needle, some scissors and some stitch markers.
- To make the matchbox and name card, you will need access to a printer and to print the relevant pages out onto thick white paper or thin white card.
You are welcome to sell the items that you make using this pattern, but please do not sell / share the pattern itself. Thank you.
