Math Class Mitts
These simple garter stitch fingerless mitts may look sophisticated, but they make a perfect first project for a new knitter. You only need to know the knit stitch. All other techniques are explained in photo tutorials: casting on, the three needle bind off, and finishing. Knitting vocabulary is also explained in more detail than a typical pattern because the audience is a new knitter. Although the pattern suggests two sizes, it explains how to size the mitts for any size hand.
A special note about gauge
While gauge is usually important in a pattern, for this pattern it is not, making these a forgiving project for a new or unsure knitter.
Materials needed
90-100 yards of worsted yarn
US size 7 knitting needles
A spare knitting needle, preferably in a smaller size and double-pointed
Tapestry needle, scissors, measuring tape
I have shared this pattern with students in a knitting class I teach at a local high school so it has been tested on beginner knitters. My students challenge me to come up with patterns that are easy, fun, and stylish. I hope you enjoy this pattern and a lifetime of knitting!
