Mayan Maze Tile
This tile is crocheted in mosaic overlay technique, in the round. This implies that there are no numerous ends to fasten off, just two for each color used. The technique is not difficult, as long as you pay close attention to the stitch placement in the chart.
Mayan Maze is made in 20 rounds, starting with a magic circle. Stitches used are (all in US terms): slip stitch, chain stitch, half double crochet, single crochet in back loop only, double crochet in front loop only.
The basic pattern is made in two colors, but the pattern includes instructions to make a tile in three colors too. Contrasting colors give the best results. Each tile that is made with DK weight yarn (115-130 m per 50 g skein) will measure about 24-26 cm and weigh about 36-44 g.
This tile will yield beautiful results in acrylic or cotton or a mixed fiber.
You may want to integrate several tiles into a throw/blanket/bedspread, along with other tiles of the same size but with a different design. You can crochet-as-you-go until your project has the number of tiles you want or need.
The pattern includes a chart, written instructions and photos to illustrate certain stitches or techniques.
I created a separate file, ‘Mosaic Tile – Crocheting the First Four Rounds’, a tutorial with plenty of photos on how to start a mosaic tile. It is intended for those who are not familiar with mosaic crochet and need more information than the pattern provides.
Have fun with it and please share your creations here!
Happy hooking!
