Pattern Inspiration:
These highly-customizable mitts are just the thing to bust a burgeoning stash. They’re also great for using up short snippets of yarn so nothing goes to waste. They work up quickly, and the result is not only pretty, but super-satisfying as well!

(I named these for the—formerly: quaint, little—ski town in Austria where the Sound of Music was partially filmed. My dad was there for foreign exchange in the 1960’s and on his recommendation, I went there in the early 2000s. It had changed so much it was totally unrecognizable, but it was still a beautiful place and I loved seeing it in what is arguably my favorite movie, so the name stuck.)

Skill Level: Beginner; basic stitches, simple shaping and finishing
Techniques: Longtail cast-on, knitting, purling, single decreases, working in the round with magic loop method, outline bind-off (explained in pattern), and lazy daisy and french knot embroidery stitches
Gauge: 20 stitches & 30 rows = 4” (10 cm) square in stockinette stitch in the round after blocking
Finished size: 7.5” (19 cm) long x 2.5” (6.4 cm) wide at cuffs without stretching, 3.5” (8.9 cm) wide at palms without stretching
Construction: These mitts are begun at the finger cuff ribbing, worked to the thumb gusset, then gusset stitches are cast on and decreased away., and then the wrist cuff ribbing is worked. Finally stitches are picked up from the thumb cast-on and the thumb ribbing is worked.

Notes:
• Embroidery illustrated on last page so you can choose which motifs you’d like to work.
• These should fit hand sizes from women’s small to men’s large (embroidery does reduce the stretch; so for larger sizes, omit embroidery).

Helpful tips:

  • A note on yardage: woolen spun and/or elastic yarns will likely use slightly less than 100 yards for both mitts. Worsted spun and/or less elastic yarns will likely use closer to—or maybe even more than—100 yards, and will not stretch to accomodate as many hand sizes. Please keep this in mind when making your yarn selections.

  • If you use cotton yarn for the waste yarn cast-on, it will come out of the stitches much easier.

  • The mitts are highly customizable: at least one test knitter with hands on the smaller side said it would be good to omit a couple of rows toward the beginning to make the mitts a more comfortable length. It’s advisable to remove stockinette rows to alter length, if needed, so all the ribbings will still match.

  • If you prefer not to work the ribbing, you could also do stripes or put simple silk ribbon bows on the back of the mitts.
