CONSTRUCTION
MEADOWFULL is worked in pieces and assembled with visible, crocheted seams. The front and back are worked from side to side, with a floral-inspired lace panel incorporated into the front. Shoulder shaping and a crew neck collar are worked directly into the selvedge edges of each piece (pattern includes variation for a turtleneck collar). The two pieces are then crocheted together at the shoulders and sides.
Note: all crocheted seams can be replaced with sewn seams if desired.
SHAPE & FIT
MEADOWFULL is a straight-bodied vest with a snug to relaxed fit. It is intended to sit on top of the shoulders and finish at the high hip.
CHOOSING A SIZE
To choose the correct size for you, two body measurements are important:
- Chest - measure around the fullest part of your upper torso
- Shoulder to shoulder - measure the distance from one shoulder edge to the other, making sure to keep the tape measure flat.
For the best fit, pick a size that allows for 0-10cm/0-4” positive ease at the chest, and which measures 1-3cm/” less than your shoulder-to-shoulder measurement.
Note: Suggestions on how to adapt the fit to your body shape are included in the pattern.
YARN
Honer och Eir Nutiden (fingering/sport weight; 100% unspun wool) in GLIMT (cream) or TUNNET (light grey-green) held double
Quantity - 225 (250, 300, 350, 400) {450, 500, 575, 650, 725} g
Note on the featured yarn: Nutiden is an unspun wool (also sometimes referred to as “pencil roving”) for which length/metre information is not available. This is because each batch is unique and density, thickness and length all vary. I have therefore provided information on how many grams of Nutiden are needed per size. Tips on working with this yarn are given in the Appendix. To substitute for a different yarn, please see “Yarn Alternatives” and “Yardage Required” below.
Yarn Alternatives
This garment is designed for a heavy fingering/sport weight yarn held double, OR for a single strand of worsted (aran) weight yarn. To obtain similar results to the featured yarn, use a lofty, woollen-spun, non-superwash wool (a few suggestions are given in the Appendix). Alternatively, anything with a natural halo (i.e. something that looks a bit fuzzy or hairy) and which will bloom with blocking will also work. For example, you could use alpaca, a rustic and untreated wool, or either of those held together with a strand of mohair. The vest will feel significantly heavier if made in a plant-based fibre such as linen or cotton, or in a yarn containing silk.
Yardage Required
720 (800, 960, 1120, 1280) {1440, 1600, 1840, 2080, 2320} m / 790 (880, 1050, 1230, 1400) {1580, 1750, 2020, 2280, 2540} yds of sport weight yarn, held double
OR
360 (400, 480, 560, 640) {720, 800, 920, 1040, 1160} m / 395 (440, 525, 615, 700) {790, 875, 1010, 1140, 1270} yds of worsted weight yarn on its own
FABRIC TYPE
MEADOWFULL is worked in 3rd loop HTC ribbing using a soft and airy wool yarn in a medium weight. The resulting fabric is squishy and warm with a medium amount of drape. It will want to stretch sideways over time, as both the front and back are worked from side-to-side. To counteract this, you can focus on stretching the piece lengthways when blocking. Always store your garment flat rather than on a hanger to prevent it from becoming misshapen.
HOOKS, NEEDLES + NOTIONS
4.0mm and 4.5mm hooks, or as required to obtain gauge
2 removable stitch markers
Wool needle
GAUGE
13 sts x 10 rows = 10x10 cm / 4”x4” in HTC 3rd loop ribbing, using larger hook and measured after wet blocking.
13 sts x 4 rows = 10x8 cm / 4”x3” in lace pattern
Note: both the ribbing and the lace pattern are quite stretchy. If you use a lofty yarn (such as the one featured), you will be able to block the garment (quite aggressively if necessary) to your desired measurements.
