This pattern was originally published as Close Knit’s contribution to the 2020 Rose City Yarn Crawl in Portland, Oregon. The pattern is also part of the 2020 Pattern Collection: Birds of the Pacific Northwest.

This shawl is inspired by the colors and texture of the Western Meadowlark. I love the splash of bright gold this bird has on its chest, in contrast to its neutral, speckled wings. You start by knitting a gradient stripe section horizontally, then pick up stitches and knit the rest of the scarf on the bias, in stitch patterns inspired by birds’ feet and wings. The yarn is held double throughout.
