Meander Hat
Meander Hat by Irina Dmitrieva
This toasty hat is dense with cabled texture to keep head and ears cozy on cold, windy winter days. But far from being utilitarian alone, it will add a layer of eye-catching texture and depth to a plain coat or zingy movement when mixing patterned fabrics for a bolder look. Worked in the round from brim to crown, the constant cabling will keep you nailed to this project til the last stitch is complete. Add a pompom for extra height or a fun accent.
Substituting yarn and/or needles may result in an overall variation in size and drape.
Suggested Yarns: Bare Naked Wools Ginny DK, Stone Soup DK, Kent DK, Confection Sport, Chebris Sport, or Cabecou Sport
Finished Size: 18 inches / 46 cm brim circumference and 8.5 inches / 22 cm height from base of ribbing to top of crown, to fit head sizes 21 to 23 inches / 53 to 58 cm around. Measurements taken from relaxed fabric after blocking.
Yarn Requirements: 220 yards / 200 m; includes yardage for pom pom
Gauge:
22 stitches and 28 rnds = 4 inches / 10 cm in stockinette worked in the round on larger needle (unblocked)
Needles:
6US (4.0 mm) 16-inch circular needle and DPNs (or size to obtain correct gauge)
4US (3.5 mm) 16-inch circular needle (or .5 mm smaller than gauge needle)
Note: use needle type of choice; DPNs, a single long circular needle for magic loop, or two shorter circular needles will all work well.
