Meandering Flow Shawl
All my patterns are free until the end of my holiday break (6 January 2025). Happy holidays!
This is a brioche shawl pattern with a twist - the pattern is entirely randomised by dice rolls and so every shawl will be unique. It is the fifth of the Pathways collection of randomised brioche knits.
A deceptively simple pattern consisting of a four row repeat that makes the knitting almost mindless while the dice-rolling means that swirling pattern changes throughout its length. The brioche knit means that it is reversible as well.
If you’ve knit the Meandering Flow Scarf, this shawl is based on the same principle. Added intricacy compared to the scarf has led to the graceful curves and varying density of fabric, leading to one of the snuggliest shawls that hugs your shoulders. It drapes so well that it can be worn like a cape without tucking the ends into your elbows!
My final product was roughly 1.4 m long and 64 cm wide (and I’m a tight knitter), but the length is absolutely customisable. Just stop knitting whenever you want! The width is also customisable, with a section explaining how but it will require some planning and maths.
This shawl takes 1.5 skeins of each colour in total. If you’d like to use only one skein of each colour, have a look at the Meandering Flow Shawlette!
I’ve included two sets of instructions. One set of instructions are detailed and outlines stitch by stitch, the other set of instructions gives an overview for knitters like me who are impatient and lose track of where I am in a pattern easily.
Also included is an explanation of the basic principle - it should equip you with the understanding of how the pattern works and thus how you can customise the width or pattern!
If you’re a D&D player or just like nice dice like me, now is the time to pull them out and roll it without having to wait for the next session! This pattern uses a D10 (10-sided dice for those not in the know) and an optional D4 to keep track of the repeats.
The sample knit is done in a Amanita and Chough Off in Yak/Silk 4ply by Little Bird Makes.
