Medieval Style Long Stockings
If you are a History buff or really into living history, this is a good pair of stockings to have. The construction techniques are correct for the time. The pattern gauge is not as fine as the original pair, but still is within historic norms. At about 10 stitches per inch, most modern knitters find this within their reach, and still fine enough to fit their needs. The sole gusset on this stocking makes for a very nice fit for a well-turned foot.
The stockings that this pattern were based on is the pair interred with the Duke Barnim XII of Pomerania. He was the owner of several pairs of interesting stockings, and was buried with a pair in 1603. The originals were knit of silk, probably imported from Italy or Spain. This pattern shows a shorter version (easier for ladies wear at the time, worn with garters at the knee) and a longer version, made to be laced or ‘pointed’ to suitable undergarments.
An approximate yardage is given, since their are options available for sizing and adjustment. Using finer yarn, or more dense hand spun yarn will affect sizing and yarn requirements.
Skills needed: Knit, Purl, SSK, K2tog, pick up and knit, M1, three needle bind off.
