Medina Lace Poncho
The Medina Lace Poncho is designed to be your favorite little cover-up!
Knit in Berroco Medina yarn, it provides just the right amount of coverage over a summer tank, tee, or sleeveless dress.
The possibilities are endless, since you can substitute almost any yarn.
Instructions are clearly written for a poncho that measures
28” wide x 22” long, in a mesh lace and garter stitch pattern.
The pattern is simple and repetitive, making it enjoyable to knit, with impressive results.
The poncho is creating by knitting 2 rectangles for the front and back, and joining them at the shoulders.
As written, each rectangle measures approx. 28” wide x 22” long, after blocking.
You can easily adjust the width (make it either wider or narrower), and the length (make it either longer or shorter).
Required skills are casting on, knitting, purling, increasing (yarn over), decreasing (k2tog) binding off, and basic mattress stitch seaming.
The pattern is not difficult, if you are comfortable with the required skills. It does, however, require that you pay attention to your knitting!
It will be helpful if you have some experience in knitting lace, and ‘reading your stitches’. Use of markers and lifelines will be helpful.
You can either choose to follow the pattern as written, or make changes to the width, length, and neck opening, as desired.
Keep in mind that if you choose to make the poncho wider and/or longer, then you’ll need additional yarn.
Sample was knit using 3 skeins of Berroco Medina (295 yds/100 grams per skein), in color 4712, and size 6 needles.
Any comparable DK weight yarn can be substituted.
Because the pieces are knit flat, you can use either straight or circular needles. (I used 24” circular needles.)
Recommended gauge for pattern is 4 sts per inch, in garter stitch, after blocking.
Since this is not a fitted garment, gauge is not critical. It is however, important to determine the finished dimensions, after blocking.
Pattern includes detailed instructions for knitting a gauge swatch - which will be useful for learning the pattern stitch, as well as substituting yarns and/or making changes to the pattern.
Enjoy knitting it, and please post photos of your projects!
