Meggie's Christmas Stocking
A little christmas stocking that’s easy to knit. Great to hanging on the Christmas Tree, door handles or wreaths. Or, hang multiple on ribbon or fairy lights to create a garland. Even make 25 to create a refillable advent calendar. I created this as a thank-you present for a family member who had given me some gorgeous wool. They’ve since become a popular item with my family and friends. At only 10cm from top to toe it’s a great way to use up some of that left over yarn from other projects that you’ve been saving. I have used various bits of DK, Aran and sport sized yarn to make these.
There are written instructions for either knitting flat or knitting in the round. I have also included some charts for adding letters or numbers as decoration on the stocking. For knitting flat, you will just need 4.5mm needles. For knitting in the round I use the magic loop method but you can use whichever method you prefer. You will need 4.5mm circular needles (or 4.5mm needles for your method of choice) and a 4.5mm DPN needle (although you can use another needle or darning needle to mesh the stitches onto before slipping back onto your circular needles to bind off as a substitute).
Skills required: Cast on, knit, purl, bind off, k2tog, picking up stitches. Written instructions and photos for duplicate stitch technique.
Materials:
4.5mm needles - either straight/circular needles/DPNs deepening on option picked from above
Darning needle to weave in ends
Two stitch markers (optional, but I have used in the pattern to help mark the instep)
Yarn:
Any yarn will work - I have used sport, DK and aran yarn. This is a great pattern for using up scraps as you only need 10g! In DK yarn with a gauge of 24 stitches and 32 rows, the final stocking is 10cm from top to toe and 3cm wide.
For the main stockings pictured I have used: Women’s Institute Soft and Smooth Aran Yarn in plum, mustard, dark grey, dark green and light grey and Sidar Supersoft Aran in the navy.
