Melanie's Necklace
Melanie’s Necklace is a clasp-free necklace made entirely of silk. Three cords are joined at the top, and a small motif is folded over the cords to create the pendant or centerpiece of the necklace. When complete, the necklace slips easily over your head. The Alchemy Silken Straw offers enough yardage for at least two necklaces from one hank.
Melanie’s Necklace is a project that could incorporate beads. You would need to string the beads on the silk before beginning the necklace.
Each cord is 25 inches (63.5 cm) in length. I used a different hook size for each of the three cords so that each would be slightly different in circumference. You could easily make all three cords with the same hook. Two of the pendants, the natural and the orange, were made with a “B” hook. The purple pendant was made with a “D” hook.
The following stitches were used: chain, slip stitch, single crochet, double crochet, double crochet two together, double crochet three together, three chain picot.
I would categorize this pattern as intermediate in difficulty.
I recommend in the pattern directions that you soak the silk for a minute or two after completing the necklace. This will soften the silk. It will also soften as the necklace is worn. If you decide to use another yarn for this necklace, please remember to consult the ball band for instructions before soaking it in water.
The pattern pdf includes 10 photographs. Five of those show step-by-step how the cord develops. It also includes a symbols chart for the pendant.
