Melon Pattern for a Shawl or Scarf
Original lace pattern from Weldon’s Practical Knitter, Volume 5, No. 55, 14th Series, 1890.
Pattern Description from Victorian Lace Today: “Weldon’s original instructions suggested either ‘a charming light wrap’ in a fine lace yarn, or a more substantial garment in a thicker yarn. The center pattern was so pretty that I almost decided not to add the border, but in the end could not resist the temptation. However, a scarf in just the melon pattern would be lovely, say six pattern repeats with four garter stitches at each side and six rows at each end.”
Difficulty: Intermediate Lace
Measurements: 17” x 72”
Yarn Weight/Yardage: #2 Fine Weight / 700 yds
Yarn & Colorway: Rowan Kidsilk Haze 3 balls in 597 Jelly
Needles:
- 4.5mm/US 7 circular needles, or size to obtain gauge, 60cm (24”) or longer
- Two 4mm/US 6 double-pointed needles
Notions:
- Stitch markers
- Blunt needle
- Small amount of smooth yarn for cast-on
Note: The decrease in the first row of the Center Panel reduces the stitch count to the correct pattern multiple; the extra cast-on stitch provides the correct number of loops for the knitted-on border.
