A cute holiday ornament that is sure to bring a smile to the recipient’s face. Perfect for using up all those small scraps of yarn. Can be use as a hanging ornament for a tree or garland, or as a sitting ornament for the top of a mantle or piano. Or as a wrapped gift topper!

Size: Instructions are for one size, can be adjusted longer/wider snowman, if wanted by casting on more stitches at the start to widen the base, or knitting more rounds to lengthen the snowman’s body.
Yarn: 30 yards Red Heart Worsted weight yarn in white
Various colours of worsted weight yarn for hat of snowman
Various colours of sport weight yarn for scarf of snowman
1 yard Red Heart worsted weight yarn in orange (for nose)
1.5 yards Red Heart worsted weight yarn in black (for eyes, buttons, and mouth)
1.5 yards Red Heart worsted weight yarn in brown (for arms)
Needles: Set of 4mm (US 6) double pointed knitting needles
Gauge: 20 sts and 26 rows = 4x4 inch square in stockinette stitch
Other Materials: Polyfil stuffing for filling the snowman
Light-weight cardboard circle, 10 cm in diameter (or size needed, depending on gauge and finished size of snowman) I used the cardboard from a box of breakfast cereal.
White felt circle, 11 cm in diameter (or size needed, depending on gauge and finished size of snowman)
Darning needle for weaving in ends and adding details

A few notes about the construction of this snowman: This snowman is worked bottom up, in the round. A felt and cardboard circle are cut out afterwards, and seamed to the bottom of the snowman to help is sit flat and give it the “melting” appearance. The scarf, hat, and nose are knit afterwards, and seamed in place. Lastly, the details (mouth, arms, chest “buttons”, and eyes) are embroidered on using darker coloured yarn. If desired, a string can be knotted on the top so the snowman can be used as a hanging ornament.
