Imagine a beautiful lady wearing gauntlets on her ride to the lake: her name is Melusina, and she is the wife of a noble chevalier, who had to promise before their marriage that he would never follow her on these weekly excursions.
But inevitably, he grows curious and one day sets out to discover her secret. The moment he arrives at the lake and watches his wife turn into a mermaid, he realises that this has sealed her fate: heartbroken, she must leave him and their children and remain in the water forever.

Construction
The main part of these mitts is worked in the round from the fingers to the wrist: The thumb is cast on first, then the hand is worked until the point where it is joined to the thumb. The thumb stitches are then gradually decreased. At the end, the cuff is knit on sideways, shaped with strategically-placed cables, and grafted with Kitchener stitch to form a band around the wrist.

Skills required
Knitting and purling both flat and in the round over a small circumference; working increases and decreases; working different types of cables over 2–6 stitches; working a provisional cast-on with a crochet hook; grafting stitches with Kitchener stitch.

Finished measurements
M (L): 7 (7.75)” / 18 cm (18.5cm) circumference and 7.5 (8.25)” / 19 cm (21cm) long
To adapt this design for smaller hands, choose thinner yarn and smaller needles.

Needles
Use your preferred needles for knitting in the round over a small circumference in the size needed to achieve gauge.
You will also need 2 additional double-pointed needles in the same size for the cuff.

Notions

  • Cable needle

  • 5 stitch markers (2 of them should be locking stitch markers or safety pins)

  • Tapestry needle

  • Crochet hook and 20’’ (50cm) of smooth waste yarn for the provisional cast-on
