I went for a family day out to Westonbirt Arboretum on a gloriously sunny autumn day. The trees were a mix of blazing reds, plums, oranges and yellows set against a backdrop of a myriad of greens and blue-greens of the spruce and evergreens. I wanted to create a shawl that captured the beautiful colours of that day.
You can use any colours for your shawl..create your own memory of a special day in colour, a beautiful sunset, the stunning gradients of a turquoise sea, the possibilities are endless
The shawl is worked from the tip to the broad edge using a base colour and then a set of eight colours.
The pattern has one (optional) row of short rows just before the start of the patterned section. This single row helps the ripple in the pattern really stand out, but if you don’t want to knit short rows there are instructions for omitting it.
The size of the shawl can be adjusted by working more or less coloured sections as desired.
Coloured section:
Each of the 8 coloured sections requires between 10g, 40 m/ 44yds (for the first smaller sections) up to a maximum of about 15g, 60 m/66 yds for the last largest section.
However, the coloured section can be made using a single skein of yarns such as this gradient or completely change the look by using a few neutral shades

Suitable for intermediates and experts alike.
Gauge
Gauge is not too important but about 24 sts and 36 rows on a 3.75 mm (US 5) needle in stocking st. A different gauge will affect the finished size of the shawl.
Size:
Wingspan: 74”/ 188 cm, depth 20”/ 51 cm after good blocking.
Yarn required:
MC (Pale colour): ~80g ~292 m /315 yds sock weight yarn.
Coloured yarns:
You can use either 8 individual colours:
CC1: ~30 m/ 33 yds
CC2: ~32 m/ 35 yds
CC3: ~33 m/ 36 yds
CC4: ~ 36 m/ 39 yds
CC5: ~ 39 m/ 43 yds
CC6: ~ 43 m/ 47 yds
CC7: ~48 m/ 53 yds
CC8: ~ 50 m/ 55 yds
If using a gradient skein of yarn: ~360 m/ 395 yds.
A note on yarn choice: Use yarns with a good contrast between the MC and coloured sections as this will really help the ripple ‘pop’
Needles and notions:
3.75 mm (US 5) circular needle 32” or size required to obtain gauge.
Needle to darn in ends
Skills required:
You must be able to knit, purl, kfbf, yo, ssk, k2tog, k2togtbl, p2tog, p2togtbl, i-cord.
The short rows are optional but do enhance the waves at the start of the pattern. If you want to knit them then you need to wrap and turn on the right side and wrong side.
