Memories in Lichen is a lightweight chemise inspired by my favorite things about summer -- afternoon teas, languid evenings spent outside enjoying gentle breezes and the play of light on my father’s garden, reading romantic novels, and, of course, the quintessentially English summer muslin worn by many a Jane Austen heroine. The delicate floral motifs and soft stripes of these “wallpaper prints” are echoed in the lace of the skirt and sleeves; accents in the form of a waist tie, sleeve ruffles and a ruffle under the skirt add a sense of romance that is elegant without being fussy.

A word about ease: The blouse is designed with 2-4”5-10 cm of negative ease at the bust (about 10%) and positive ease at the hips. If you are right between sizes, knit the larger size.

Yardage suggested above is for main yarn (Skinny Bugga!) only. Ruffles and accent ties are are worked in Gaia Lace and are all optional additions.

Construction Notes

This top is knit in the round from underbust outwards, starting with a provisional cast-on increasing to a full overskirt. The optional underskirt is knit in the round beginning at the underbust and increasing gently to 2”/5 cm before the hem at which point dramatic increases are used to create a soft ruffle. The upper body is constructed by working in the round from underbust to underarms where the back and front are then worked separately to the shoulders. If you are working the underskirt, the underskirt and overskirt are both joined to the upper body by knitting one stitch from the overskirt together with one stitch from the underskirt in a manner similar to a 3- needle bind-off. The shoulders are joined with a by seaming; stitches are picked up around the armholes to work sleeves. Stitches are picked up from the wrong side of the sleeve cuffs and worked in the round to create sleeve ruffles. Contrasting waist tie is worked flat. Optional belt loops are added in finishing.
