From my visit to Shetland, I had three vivid memories that stuck with me; the softly undulating treeless but verdant lands, the beautiful sheep with their great variety of natural colours, and this lovely little traditional cockle shell pattern.

I have combined these into this scarf, inspired by the traditional shawls of Shetland, but smaller, so designed to be worn round the neck rather than over the shoulders.

The cockle shell is an old and well loved pattern from Shetland, but it is mostly used in rectangular scarves and stoles. Here I have modified the pattern to accommodate for the decreases and symmetry of a triangular shawl.

Construction: bottom-up triangular/heart-shaped. Cast on by knitting a sideways lace edging, rather than beginning by casting on 381 stitches.
