By changing the yarn and needles used to knit these fun hats, you can make them for many different sizes of dolls. The earflaps and band are knit back and forth. The top parts of the hats and the eyes are knit in the round, using double pointed needles, 2 circular needles or magic loop.

Instructions are given for 3 different styles of hat (square top, spiral decrease and double decrease).

You can use the base patterns to make plain hats, or follow the directions for the Owl, Chicken, Frog and Panda variations.

Size Large is knit with sport weight yarn and 3.25mm needles.

Size Medium is knit with fingering weight yarn and 2.5mm needles.

Size Small is knit with lace weight yarn and 1.5mm needles.

Only very small amounts of yarn are required for each hat.

GAUGE:

Large - 25 stitches/4” (modelled by Blythe - 27cm head circumference)

Medium - 30 stitches/4” (modelled by Meadow Dolls Dumpling - 21cm head circumference and Mini Mui Chan - 25cm head circumference); Mini Mui Chan can also wear size large for an oversized look (see photo of Mini Mui Chan in Frog version)

Small - 12 stitches/1” (modelled by Nikki Britt’s Ellabella/Ellemenno - 15cm head circumference)

  • If your doll has a lot of hair, you might want to try using needles a size larger and/or knitting 1 or 2 extra rounds before beginning the decrease rounds on your hat.

  • The instructions are the same for each size. Any of the styles can be made in small, medium or large, but I find the OWL eyes look a bit bulky in the smaller sizes.
