Mend is a simple triangle shawl and the second in a series of projects using the concept of Assigned Pooling.

Assigned Pooling occurs when a change in stitch and texture is assigned to changes in color within a skein of variegated yarn. In this case, simple Stockinette Stitch is assigned to the main color to create a backdrop for the Linen Stitch assigned to the accent color. The visual effect is one of woven mending across a knitted fabric.

Yarn​​ three skeins of Barker Wool BFL Fingering in the colorway Berry Bramble or approximately 1,200 yards of variegated fingering weight yarn.

Every assigned pooling project will be as unique as the yarn you choose. Use these instructions as a basic guide, and let your creativity flow with the color changes in your variegated skein.

When choosing a variegated yarn, look for sections of accent color that run from ¼ to ½ of the total length of the hank. High contrast, whether in value, (light and dark), or in complement, (opposites on the color wheel), will have a higher impact. Simple combinations of two or three colors within a skein will make your texture stitches more noticeable. Lower contrast combinations and skeins with shorter, random color repeats and speckling will make it more difficult for the texture pattern to stand out.

Assigned Pooling is a way to embrace color pooling by letting the color changes have control of the texture pattern.
