Mending Fences
Pattern Launch Discount: Use code LONGWOOL for 20% off until Friday, March 14, 2025.
Mending Fences Cowl is knit as a rectangle that is folded and seamed to create an easy-to-wear accessory. The pattern of garter and elongated stitches over a stockinette background looks intricate but is simple to work. Knit in a worsted-spun, longwool yarn from Ashford Heights Farm, the slip stitch pattern shines. Gotland and Leicester Longwool sheep breeds are admired for their luster, durability, warmth, and drape. Learn more on YouTube.
Size: One size, easily customized by knitting a shorter or longer rectangle before seaming. Adding length will require more yardage/meterage and a second skein of C1 in the recommended yarn.
Dimensions: 14” (35.5 cm) wide and 38” (96.5 cm) long after blocking and before seaming, creating a neck opening of approximately 24” (61 cm)
Yarn and Yardage Requirements: Approximately 450 yards (411.5 meters) total; 200 yards (183 meters) of C1, 125 yards (114 meters) each of C2 and C3
Yarn Suggestion: Ashford Heights Farm Salt & Pepper Wool, 3-ply worsted, 200 yards (183 meters). Sample uses one skein each of Gotland Silver Grey (C1), Leicester Longwool 20% Merino Lilac Bush (C2), and Gotland 20% Merino Dark Lilac (C3).
When substituting yarn, you might wish to seek out a locally produced longwool sheep breed, many of which are conservation breeds. The stitch pattern is beautifully suited to pair with the long staple length and characteristics of such a wool.
Gauge: 18.5 stitches x 28 rows in 4” (10 cm) squared, in pattern, after blocking. Gauge is not critical but will affect final dimensions and yardage/meterage requirements.
Important Note: Blocking will significantly lengthen the fabric and may decrease its unblocked width slightly. Each chart repeat is approximately 2” (5 cm) long before blocking and approximately 2.25–2.5” (5.5–6.5 cm) long after blocking.
