Mending Stitch is a light, loose-knit shawl with a well-stitched look - a good alternative to lacy traditional motifs. It’s simple to knit, and you’ll only need a single 24-48” circular knitting needle in size needed for gauge in order to make it. It’s good travel knitting that continues to travel well once it’s a finished part of your wardrobe.

Recommended needle sizes are US 4-7 (3.5mm to 4.5mm), depending on your knitting style and chosen yarn.

Gauge is about 4.5 st/in. in pattern. Gauge is given as a guideline and to help with yardage and size, but isn’t life-or-death (or wearable-or-not) important in a shawl.

This pattern contains written instructions for the shawl in one easy-to-mod size - it’s designed to be knit in one skein of luxury sock yarn, but you can knit this with virtually any fingering-weight yarn, and it’s excellent in handspun. Use two skeins and go huge for a super cozy wrap, or work with heavy fingering or sport yarn to make Mending Stitch winter-weight.

Mending Stitch makes an epic handspun project, too, whether you work on a wheel or with a spindle! Aim for a single ply yarn in light colors or a yarn with some color shift to show the pattern best.
