One needle is used to knit the project, the second needle is used for the Kitchener st joining.

This is the recommended needle size. Your gauge may be different than mine with the recommended needle. If so, use the needle size that allows you to get gauge. Gauge is not crucial on this pattern but you run the risk of using more or less yardage if your gauge is different.
