Free-spirited and headstrong, Merida from 2012’s Brave is a medieval princess from Clan DunBroch in the mythical Highlands of Scotland. Born with a fierce independent streak, it is Merida’s stubbornness and refusal to conform to traditions that don’t match her true self that lead her down a path toward changing her fate. Merida is dressed in a deep green dress for much of the film with Celtic cabling on her belt, her mother’s necklace, and the bottom of her dress. Celtic cabling is also visible in many other places in the film, including costumes, jewelry, insignias, various textiles, and the film’s elegant title treatment.

Grab your needles and get ready to chase the wind and touch the sky! Knit flat back and forth in rows and edged with fringe, this cabled scarf mimics the cables in the opening title credits in Brave. Three and four-stitch cables weave in and out of each other on a background of reverse stockinette and columns of twisted stitches. Knit in a deep green yarn the same color as Merida’s archery contest dress with golden cables running along the bottom, this scarf has an easily adjustable length and makes an excellent gift knit for anyone thinking about changing their fate.
