This hat pattern is part of a collection that incorporates sand stitch. And I don’t know about you, but I can’t think of anything other than sun, sand and beaches when I’m knitting in this sand stitch. For that reason, I decided to name the pieces in this collection after my favorite beach, Merkel beach, in Harwich Port, Massachusetts.
This hat is worked in the round, starting with a 1x1 twisted rib stitch. Then, you work the main body of the hat in sand stitch (a four-row repeat). Finally, you decrease evenly along four lines to shape the crown evenly. Once you are done, you can opt to add on a pom pom for a bit of fun flare!

I hope this hat keeps you warm throughout the winter, thinking about sandy days at the beach!

  • Size US 11/8mm 16” circular needles or double pointed needles
  • 4 Stitch Markers: 1 in a different color to indicate your BOR and 3 in another color. When shaping the crown, these will be used to mark where you will decrease in 4 places.
  • Darning needle
  • Scissors
  • Yarn: 32(45,58,74,92) yards or 29(41,53,68,84) meters of a light bulky weight size 5 yarn or 1(1,2) skeins of Petite Wool yarn from We Are Knitters (I used color “Spotted Blue“ for the sample). If you wish to add a pom pom at the end, please account for approximately 16 yards or 14 meters of additional yarn.
