Merley the highland cow
This .pdf crochet pattern is written in standard American crochet terms. With this very detailed pattern, you can make a super cute wild-looking, friendly beast, a highland cow!
This is an intermediate pattern made with basic stitches. The difficulty lies in creating the seamless body and using rls stitches to achieve the hairy details. Instructions for working up the body are well explained, and I’ve also created a video tutorial for the rls stitch.
Size
If you use the recommended yarn, your cow will be 6 inch / 15 cm long
Materials
For this crochet cow you’ll need worsted weight yarn and an E US/3.5 mm crochet hook. This cow is made with two strands of Istex Einband Lopi held together, in the colour almond heather - 9076 (1/6 of two skeins held together) and Istex Lètt Lopi yarn in the colour barley - 1419 (a leftover bit will do and only a single strand). For the eyes I’ve used 8 mm animal safety eyes. You will also need fibrefill. I’ve used wool filling. A pipe cleaner for the horns & pellets to give extra weight to the feet is optional.
The crochet pattern contains
An intro with useful info. List of materials, tools and accessories needed. Brand and colour numbers of the needed yarn. A clear and colour coded description of how to crochet and assemble the animal, with instruction images with extra notes next to the text and example pictures at the bottom to help you get everything right. All my patterns are text edited for correct English and have been tested by experienced crocheters before publishing.
Yarn
Istex Lett lopi (for this cow two strands of Einban lopi are used as main colour). I strongly recommend using a fuzzy yarn because it gives the best result. Keep in mind a different type of yarn can give a different result!
Gauge is unimportant for this pattern. If the pieces are crocheted tightly enough, they will not gape visibly when stuffed. You can make a little test swap to be sure.
