This child-size mermaid tail afghan/blanket pattern is of my own design. It is a cocoon-style “afghan” that children can wear that looks like a mermaid tail.

Unlike some mermaid tail afghans, my version is a little wider and longer than average. This allows the wearer to pull it up to his/her chest or snuggle down inside it while laying down. The finished child afghan fits ages 4 to 8 comfortably with instructions on extending the length for children up to 12 years old. The cocoon portion of the afghan measures approximately 36-40 inches long and 36-38 inches around (I give a sizing “wiggle room” range to allow for a tighter or looser stitch tension).

I designed this afghan to be wider and longer than the average mermaid afghan pattern out there because I wanted it to be roomy and long enough for comfort. It can be worn as a lap afghan or pulled up to your chest/underarms. For children older than 12, I advise using the adult-size pattern, which is also available in my shop.

The scale stitch included in the pattern is my own version of the stitch, which gives the mermaid tail a fine, scaly textured appearance.

I had a great deal of fun creating the mermaid afghan patterns and worked very hard to make them available for purchase. I’m excited to share them with others who also share an affinity for crochet as well as mermaids.
