This pattern uses two colors of yarn and a simple cable stitch to give the impression of scales. If you wish to use only one color, there will be a puckering caused by the cable stitch that will also give a scale effect. Photographs show a blanket made with Bernat blanket yarn (a chunky yarn). You may also knit this blanket using two strands of worsted weight yarn held together.
Separate instructions are provided for a blanket to be laid across the lap and for a blanket knit in a cocoon fashion. The lap blanket includes a cozy little pocket for your feet.
Written instructions are given to make a toddler, child and teen-sized blankets with the following measurements (all measurements are taken with the blanket gently laid out, not stretched):
Toddler: Waist circumference = approximately 26 inches / 66 cm. Length = approximately 29.5 inches / 75 cm from waist band to toe and 48.5 inches / 123.2 cm from waistband to end of tail fin.
Child: Waist circumference = approximately 52 inches / 132 cm. Length = approximately 42.5 inches / 108 cm from waist band to toe and 63.5 inches / 161.3 cm from waistband to end of tail fin.
Teen: Waist circumference = approximately 58 inches / 147.3 cm. Length = approximately 54.5 inches / 138.4 cm from waist band to toe and 77.5 inches / 196.7 cm from waistband to end of tail fin.
Additional information is provided to assist you to make additional adjustments to the width and length of the blanket, as desired.
Difficulty level: Intermediate
General washing instructions: Machine wash in cool water, delicate setting with a mild detergent. Tumble dry, low heat, delicate cycle or lay flat to dry. Exact washing and drying instructions may vary based on your choice of materials.
