A cancer diagnosis is a terrible shock. I wanted to make a healing shawl to wrap my friend in love and warmth, that would be pretty and would knit up relatively quickly. I decided on a feather and fan motif.

The Rios Solis skeins with their deep blues and greens have a shimmer that reminds me of water. Knit in a feather and fan motif, they undulate like a mystical mermaid’s tail.

I used 4.5 mm needles to cast-on and bind-off, and 4 mm needles for the body. Larger needles can be used if a looser stitch is desired.

I used 6 skeins of yarn (210 yards/skein). Unblocked, the shawl was 22 x 70 inches. It could easily block to 24 x 72 inches, or larger. An additional skein of yarn would be needed if a wider or longer shawl is desired.
