of solid color and at least 230 yards in a skein of variegated)

Gauge:
3.5 Quad V-Stitches (or 14 DC) and 7 Rows = 4” Square

Pattern Notes:
This pattern is worked in the round using Quad V-Stitches (described below). Toward the end of the tail
tip you will decrease by crocheting Quad V-Stitches together (described below). The end of the tail is
then stitched together using single crochet stitches. The fin is crocheted separate and sewn to the end
of the tail. At the end of each round you will join with a slip stitch to the top of the chain two from the
beginning of the round. The chain two counts as a double crochet in each instance. You will then slip
into the next stitch and then into the chain one space between the V-stitch at which point you will
change colors.

Changing colors: You will change colors after each round. It is easiest to keep the strands you are not
using at the back of your work (inside the tail) and bring them up as you go. To bring the unused strands
up to the next row simply hold them against the work when slipping to join at the end of the round and
be sure to slip stitch around the strands. If you are not familiar with this concept, simply let the unused
strand hang down in the inside of the work. When it is time to use that color yarn, simply grab it and join
into the work. You will end up with a zig zag line of color changes, but this will be inside the work and
therefore unseen. Either way, it is easier to use the working yarn and let the other two hang out at the
inside of the work until you need them than try to weave in tons of ends if you cut each time you finish a row.

Sizing: The mermaid tail is meant to fit snuggly, it is like a close fitting sleeping bag. To get a perfect fit,
measure the hips of the intended recipient. The tail should be made to fit the hips. Suggestions for sizing
are included for 2T-4T, 4-6X and 7-8 and 9-10. Other sizes can be made by simply increasing or
decreasing the number of chains in the beginning of the work. Be sure to chain numbers divisible by 5.
