Merrow Cardigan
Materials
- YARN - 4(5)5(6)6) skeins of 200g/87 yds or 150g/90yds for crop and regular length. Add an extra skein for longer length. Cotton: hold several strands to achieve gauge if needed. If you are doing color work please increase your overall yardage by 15% to allow for color yarn floats. I would get the recommended total amount of yarn for body/arm color and add a skein for edging colors and another 1-3 skeins for color inside fish scale. Note: If you plan on adding any length to what is written in the pattern please buy extra yarn to accommodate this extra length. Approximately 50 yards of yarn per row of scales.
- CORDS - ranging from 16”(40cm) to 47”(120cm)
- TOOLS - Measuring tape, Jumbo stitch markers or waste yarn, tapestry needle
Suggested Needle
- US 19 (15mm)
Gauge
Using US 19 (15mm) needles in the Merrow Stitch (Cast on 28 sts and do rows 1-16 in pattern)
1 scale = 1 slp st + 6 stockinette sts + 1 slp st (A to B)
(200g/87yds) 1 scale = 3.75” x 2.5” (8 sts total)
(150g/90yds) 1 scale = 3.5” x 2” (8 sts total)
Using US 19 (15mm) needles in Stockinette Stitch
(200g/87yds) 4” x 4” (10cm x 10cm) = 6 sts x 8 Rows
(150g/90yds) 4” x 4” (10cm x 10cm) = 7 sts x 10 rows
Sizing
Size 1(2)3(4)5 (ultralight italic) through out the pattern. Sizing fits bust sizes of 30/32”(34/36”)38/40”(42/44”)46/48”
The length of body and arms can be adjusted to either shorter or longer. Add a hidden clasp or buttons for functionality.

If you would like to make the cardigan less wide then subtract 8 sts from your cast on for ~4” less on width. Same with making your cardigan wider, add 8sts to your cast on adding ~4” to the width. The reason for the 8sts is because of the fish scale stitch pattern. (Refer to gauge)
If you would like to add any length to the upper body part where sleeves are attached to then make sure to accommodate this in sleeves. For example: If you add an extra 2 rows on front and back panels then add and extra 4 sts to your cast on for sleeve. Adding only 1 row to front and back? Then add 2 cast on sts to sleeve.
You can also add length to your body by adding extra fish scale stitch rows (1-8 or 9-16 in pattern) before separating body for sleeves. Each row of scales is
Length for arms is customizable. Continue in stockinette stitch for extra desired length. For example: You would like sleeves to be 2” longer or shorter then add 2” to your stockinette before ribbing.
