The pattern includes instructions for knitting them flat or in the round, and you add the designs afterwards with duplicate stitch using the charts at the end of the pattern. Or you can just make them with a fun yarn and let the yarn be the star.

For mittens knit flat, I wanted to keep things as simple as possible, so that relative beginners could use this pattern. Consequently, I used only one type of increase (used for the thumb gusset) and one type of decrease (used for the shaping at the top of the mitten and thumb. For mittens knit in the round, I added an extra increase and decrease option.
